Under the honey sun lights in the early morning of Sai Gon, people enjoy “pho”, “com tam” or “banh mi” in the small valeys.
Breakfast in the alley is a popular style many Saigonese choose. Bread is one of the most popular breakfast foods. Located on Cao Thang street is a shop that has been selling since 1960. Besides the crispy loaves of bread filled with many fillings, the bread served in the pan is the “specialty” of this place.
A mix of eggs, ham, fried sausages, grilled chopped fish, grilled chopped pork served with bread and pickles separately. Diners can order as they like. The place opens from 6am to 11pm daily.
The winding path leading to markets has many good eateries. One of them is Mrs. Trieu My Thau’s “banh cuon” restaurant (far left) in the center of Ban Co market, District 3.
From Lang Son but the old lady’s “banh cuon” is made in the Southern style, with mixed stir-fried fillings and sweet and sour sauce. This small restaurant has been selling for over 40 years and has become a familiar breakfast spot of the surrounding residents.
Don’t have to be famous, hundreds of popular eateries in front of alleys are still the choice of many Saigon people. That may be due to familiar taste or convenience, reasonable prices.
The space is not served carefully but gives diners a comfortable feeling.
Pho is one of the familiar breakfast dishes. Go deep into the alley on Pasteur Street, District 1, you will find Minh pho, one of the noodle restaurants that have been associated with generations of Saigon people for more than half a century.
Other popular noodle dishes cost about VND 30,000 per bowl.
“Com tam” is not as common in the morning as the above dishes but cannot be ignored. Many people think that eating “com tam” for breakfast will be a “strong start” and full of nutrients.
Many eateries attract attention by the aroma of the barbecue grill on the roadside. The meat is marinated with honey so it does not dry out, served with rice and egg rolls. Each plate costs from VND 25,000.
After breakfast, people with plenty of time will go to a coffee store to enjoy. You can try “ca phe vot”, a rare method that very few people maintain in Saigon. Instead of using a filter or brewed directly from coffee powder, the shops use a cloth racket to filter. This brewing process goes through many stages, requiring employees to be very meticulous and knowledgeable to produce the right cup of coffee.
The suggested address is Cheo Leo cafe in Nguyen Thien Thuat apartment building or Mr. and Mrs. Ba’s in alley 330, Phan Dinh Phung street.
Going further from the city center to District 5, you can experience the taste of Chinese racket coffee. Follow the main road leading to Phung Hung market, you will find Ba Lu shop although this address is located among the stalls of clothes and food.
